Don't let them scam you! NEW
by: PrepaidWirelessGuy

Unfortunately, that's definitely not an uncommon problem with Dealers. In your case, if you don't want to deal with Dealers hassling you to change service providers, I recommend you set up autopay so you don't have go to the store.

That way you still get to take advantage of prepaid while not having to go back to the store.

Also, note that wireless providers participating in ACP are not permitted to give Dealers ACP-specific compensation. They can compensate them normally (as they would with any other plan), but they can't give them an additional bounty to sign up for ACP. If they are, it's only a matter of time before the FCC audits the carrier and fines them for not complying with the rules!

Scummy Dealers NEW
by: Dave

Ever time I go to my local wireless dealer they're always trying to sell me a different service. It's super annoying, and I've learned not to trust them.

They keep trying to get me to apply to ACP so the can get their commission. I don't even qualify for ACP! I love prepaid service, however, I'm so sick of these dealers.

Yes, but don't be fooled! NEW
by: PrepaidWirelessGuy

That's a great point Jess! While I DEFINITELY agree with your sentiment regarding wireless providers generally not having very good, or even respectable customer service, everyone needs to be careful.

I say this because a lot of wireless dealers will do absolutely anything they can to make an extra buck. So, if they can get paid for each new customer, they could very well try to convince ACP customer to switch each month.

As disappointing as wireless providers can be, wireless dealers are on a different (LOWER) level. So, I'd recommend hearing them out to see if you're missing out on a better service, however, please scrutinize what they're saying, and keep a critical eye on their motivation. It may not be in your personal best interest!

Would definitely like to hear from ACP customers who may be experiencing this type of pressure in wireless dealer stores.

You can switch! NEW
by: Jess

Also wanted to note that ACP customers are allowed to switch providers once per month. So if you're not getting good service, you can leave after a pretty short time. The FCC is really trying to make the customer the priority, which is such a great thing!

Especially since a lot of wireless companies don't treat customers very well. This will definitely make them behave!

ACP Plan Differences NEW
by: PrepaidWirelessGuy

Great point! With EBB wireless providers were required to define what plan(s) would be offered for the EBB program, and they could even define an EBB-specific plan.

However, with ACP, providers are actually not permitted to restrict ACP customers from getting ANY plan they want that the provider offers. So, try to think of it as a $30 coupon towards any available plan that you want.

Most ACP customers will opt for a $30 free plan, however, they're definitely not restricted to only getting that plan. It's the ultimate customer flexibility!

Loving it! NEW
by: Jess

So one thing I learned is that ACP is different from the old EBB (Emergency Broadband Benefit) that I was looking into. With EBB there were specific plans (usually only one) that the company would offer.

With ACP the providers have to give you the $30 discount on EVERY plan that they offer to regular customers. This gives me much more flexibility. Of course, I'll want the largest FREE plan, but if I want a slightly better plan, I can always spend 5 or so bucks more if I want to.

I hope this program continues. It really is the future! Free internet is more important that free calling like the old Lifeline program.
