We are Australians traveling in the USA for 5 weeks; do they have reasonable prepaid wireless, or how do we access Internet traveling around without going to Internet cafes?

Good question; I completely understand your plight! There are so many people these days who want to be connected while traveling abroad, even if it simply for personal use. And we don't want to have to be tied to finding Internet cafes, or paying a fortune at a hotel; we just want to connect when we need it, right?!
You can check out the Prepaid Broadband Plans page and see if those offering weekly rates meet your needs. Unfortunately, for the most part, you'll need to buy a modem, which may turn you off having to make that investment. Maybe you can find a used one on ebay? Anyway, check it out!
Another option is to use Wireless Broadband Rental Services. You'll find that the per use cost is higher, but you won't have to worry about buying a modem for just a short period of time. You could plan to have it shipped to you at your hotel.
