Transferring from Safelink to TracFone? NEW
by: PrepaidWirelessGuy

So you have a Safelink phone that you want to now activate on TracFone? This isn't a question of phone, but rather account.

I recommend you call TracFone to see if they'll allow you to transition your Safelink account to TracFone while still keeping your minutes/credits.

I know they used to allow this, however, I'm not sure this is still the case. If they no longer do that, you may be able to ask for some kind of promo or credit to help cover you for lost minutes.

Let us know what they say!

My accumulated mins
by: Anonymous

My SafeLink LG wasn't working right. Sent me a new ZTE. Was told new phone would be set and ready to go. I had over 24,000 mins on old phone!!!! because my area didn't get good reception. They did not transfer those unused mins. Why not? That's wrong!

Safelink/Tracfone NEW
by: ARM

PWG looks like a nice community with a very helpful moderator.

I've been coping with Safelink/Tracfone and the ins and outs of Lifeline services for about 6 months now and I've learned a few things:

1. When calling Safelink/Tracfone use a friend's phone, either a landline or a cell phone with (preferably) unlimited minutes; you'll (probably) need to make more than 2 or 3 calls to settle any particular issue you may be having.

2. Learn the lingo; 'tech' support (such as it is) has a much better idea of what you want when you speak to them in there terms; eg. "Upgrade" means going from a flip phone (non-smartphone) account to a smart phone account; "Downgrade" means going from a smart phone to a non-smartphone account (and 500 minutes) - ask the tech support person for the name of the procedure you're involved in so that you can later identify it on another call.

3. Keep a written record of your discussions with Safelink/Tracfone staff; do *not* lose track of your "Enrollment ID".

4. If you are having a difficult time communicating with any particular tech, hang up and call again to get a new tech.

5. Be patient and courteous with Safelink/Tracfone's support staff (you are a considerate person, aren't you?); I've encountered communication problems (some due (apparently) to VOIP to where ever) but all of the tech staff I've talked to have been genuinely interested in helping - an effort to communicate in *their* terms goes a long way towards problem resolution (all said and done one is attempting to correct an individual's (your) technical issues, issues that they deal with day in and day out).

6. With Safelink/Tracfone and their Bring-Your-Own-Phone (BYOP) one can use *any* unlocked GSM phone but one must tell Safelink/Tracfone which type of phone it is and one must purchase a Tracfone BYOP SIM card (I got mine for $1.00 at Target - they don't seem to be that hard to find) and one must be able to tell Safelink/Tracfone what that SIM card number is - there were 3 SIMs in the package I bought. I used the AT&T SIM (the T-Mobile SIM didn't work as well in my city).

In my case it seems the dust has more or less finally settled. There may be an issue with minute accountability (I don't believe I used 60 minutes of phone time in a few days of sparse use).

So, Guy, let me ask: do you have any info - causes or whatever - on the apparent disappearance of unused minutes?

Thanks in advance.

Addendum NEW
by: ARM

If you Bring Your Own Phone to Safelink/Tracfone it may happen that one's smart phone isn't fully setup even with first level tech support - in this case one is able to send and receive TXT Msgs and phone calls but one cannot connect to the net.

This happens because Safelink/Tracfone was unable to send an APN (Access Point Name), used to link one's phone to the net, to your phone; in that case you'll have to enter the APN by hand (using Settings etc).

This is the APN I had to hand enter into my phone:

Name: wap.tracfone
APN wap.tracfone
Proxy; proxy.mvno.tracfone.com
Port: 8080
Username Not set
Password Not set
MMSC http://TF.mmsmvno.com/mms/wapenc
MMS proxy Not set
MMC 310
MNC 410
Authentication type None
APN type IPv4
Enable/disable APM (checked) APN enabled
Bearer Unspecified

Note: 1. All text is case sensitive, 2. mistype a single character and the APN will not work.

Que 4.5 NEW
by: PrepaidWirelessGuy

I'm not sure about the reference to the AT&T SIM; where did you get that? Is that the one that came with the TracFone Que 4.5?

Ultimately you'll need to use the SafeLink SIM card that they sent you, and your account will need to be activated for use with that SIM.

You're able to make calls, but not access the Internet? The APN needs to be updated/accurate, however, data service also needs to be provisioned on your account.

I recommend that you call SafeLink from a different phone so they can help you troubleshoot your SafeLink phone in real time.

Safelink Smartphone
by: Anonymous

I recently purchased a Que 4.5 Android smartphone from the Safelink shopping website. I purchased a SIM card, and was told to use the AT&T card when calling for help to get the phone going.

A few weeks later, countless calls to Tracfone and Safelink and I still cannot access the Internet either thru Wi-Fi or Google in apps. The APN on this phone does not allow me to add a new APN. So what do I do now??

They weren't able to fix it, however, were they able to explain what happened? When you activated your new phone, did they activate you on a different, wrong plan?

I recommend calling back and requesting to talk with a supervisor.

Hmm...
by: PrepaidWirelessGuy

Thank you for sharing your experience. It sounds like you tried to transfer from one TracFone phone to another TracFone phone, and in the process you lost money on your account. Did I get that right?

I didn't understand why you're calling this discrimination though. Can you possibly elaborate?

SafeLink WILL Lie To You, Write Down EVERYTHING
by: Anonymous

I did a SIM transfer and after 7 hours on the phone with people who only read scripts or lied, and said things were done. I have spent $40 on airtime cards and lost it all, and STILL I'm on Tracphone. I never even started with Tracphone. They made me provide all ID numbers, ticket numbers, PIN number from airtime cards etc. They didn't have a record. SOOOOO frustrating. They even give me reps with names of household products. One was named "jergens", REALLY??? Lawsuit filed for discrimination.

BYOD On SafeLink
by: PrepaidWirelessGuy

SafeLink allows you to bring your own phone. On their homepage there's a video tutorial you can watch. You'll also find a link near the bottom that says "Upgrade to a Smartphone", which also provides you information regarding how to do that. That process will allow you to check the serial number of the phone you have to see if it's compatible!

Please Help
by: Anonymous

I lost my Safelink phone a few months ago, and when I tried asking for a replacement I was told that they would not send me another free device.

However, if I had a phone, they would transfer the service to it. At the time I didn't, but now I found a few of my old phones. Is it possible to get one of them activated by Safelink? If so how?

Disappearing Minutes
by: PrepaidWirelessGuy

I'm not sure I fully understand your scenario. You are on SafeLink and bought a TracFone smartphone to activate on your existing SafeLink account?

In any case, I would expect that whatever plan is on your SafeLink account, and the rules governing rolling over unused minutes/data, or any maximum accumulation amounts would govern your account.

So if your SafeLink account doesn't allow for it, then it would be lost at the end of the month, even if they manually overrode it to first apply it when you activated.

They really should have explained such an impact to your plan, particularly with the large amount you had.

Are they allowed to do this? If the rules are part of the terms and conditions you're accepting when you originally activated the plan, then, yes. Of course, though, they should verbally inform you, and get your acceptance; that would be the ethical thing to do.

Is safelink allowed to take away preexisting minutes on android?
by: Anonymous

Had Safelink with an lg flip phone which I had purchased. Bought an LG sunset android with TMFL which came with 1350 mb data, 1350 minutes and 1350 texts, plus I had a Tom of additional time, over 5000 each of data, text and talk and a service 32nd date of 2020. When I called Safelink to activate, at first all was ok and all of my minutes, texts and data transferred perfectly. That was in December. Then, all of a sudden in February, ALL of my 5000+ minutes, data and texts disappeared, leaving me with only 500 mb data, 500 minutes and unlimited data. (i do not use a lot of minutes and data. Number of each should still have been well over 5000.) Can they do this, take away previously purchased minutes and data? The girl at Safelink at time of phone activation never said a word about my giving up all this. I would have dropped Safelink and kept as reg Tracfone.

Activation Required
by: PrepaidWirelessGuy

Are you talking about changing phones on SafeLink or TracFone? When you say that you transferred your number, do you mean that you swapped SIM cards?

Sounds like you need to call your provider to activate the new phone.

Swapping The SIM Card
by: PrepaidWirelessGuy

The key is that you'll need the SafeLink BYOP SIM Card Kit. It's basically just a SIM card that is compatible with SafeLink. If you can find a place to purchase one locally, you can go ahead and do that. If not, you'll have to wait for it in the mail.

Don't forget to text APN to 611611 to setup your data services.

Want To Transfer My SafeLink To A Used Tracfone
by: Anonymous

I recently got a used Tracfone from someone, and I wanted to transfer it to my Safelink account. My question is: Can I go buy a SIM card kit and do it, or do I have to get one sent to me in mail?

Because the guy at Tracfone told me my SIM in the used phone was expired, and that I could not go to the store and buy one. Rather I had to wait for one in the mail. Been waiting a long time for the thing too. So I'm wondering if I should go ahead and buy one if I can do that, or continue to have a paper weight until the darn thing gets here when they feel like it.

I Called Tracfone
by: Anonymous

They answered my question. I can still use the phone by buying a TracFone SIM card kit and minutes, then I have to call them back to activate it. The current SIM card is for SafeLink, and can't be used for TracFone unless it's through applying for SafeLink.

I recommend that you call TracFone to see if you can reactivate that SIM card. If they can activate it, you can subsequently add money to the account. Let me know what they say!

I'm sure this question does not belong here, but I don't know where else to find information
by: Anonymous

If somebody could know and answer me my question I would be grateful. I have a TracPhone that used to work with SafeLink, but not any more. How can I use this phone as a regular TracFone? The SIM card does not work, and I need a new phone number. Does buying a TracFone SIM card kit work? And if it does, do I need to buy Airtime first? Or do I need to buy the SIM card and then speak with customer service so they can give me a new phone number so I can use the airtime minutes?
Thank You.

Galaxy Successful for Safelink
by: RPT

Today on 12-5-16, I received a new (for Tracphone only) Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime purchased on Flea Bay for $89. I called Safelink and had my minutes and etc. ported over to the new Android, and I was up and running within a half hour.

Safelink minute usage remains the same, 500 min. per month and unlimited texts. With the Android, you just turn the data on or off as needed, and be mindful that it burns minutes at varying rates, ex. streaming a video will burn minutes faster than reading an article.

Tracphone has a free app that I installed to keep a watchful eye on my minutes. Also, yes, because it's a Tracphone/Safelink combo, I can still buy/add additional minutes if needed or desired. Monthly free 500 Safelink will remain the same, no priviledges lost. I am located in Ma.

Models That Work With SafeLink
by: PrepaidWirelessGuy

Thank you VERY much for taking the time to share your kind remarks; it's great to hear that I was able to help!

In terms of what phones will work, it won't necessarily be any model from a particular manufacturer (ex. ZTE, HTC, Samsung, etc.). You'll need to either buy one that's listed on their store, or check the compatibility of a phone you already have (or that you may buy unlocked online).

What you'll want to do is use the link below (in my previous post) to get to Upgrade Your Phone page. Then select the Bring Your Own option. Enter your zip code when prompted. It will actually take you to a Net10 page. When you click on Details it will take you to another page with another button to select Check Phone Compatibility. Then follow the steps by first selecting Phone or Tablet, and then select the carrier device that you have.

This process is a LOT of clicks and far from what I would describe as slick, but does get you there. The good news is that it appears they support a lot of phones, which is because TracFone (the parent company) has programs that are compatible with most available technologies already, and they're making it available to their SafeLink program.

Please let me know what you find out for your particular phone of interest!

U Da' Man!
by: Anonymous

Mr. G., you are an angel. A FANTASTIC Angel! Thank you so much. Also, Thank You for such a speedy response. I didn't even think I would get a response. A few times a year, I would check to see if SafeLink had upgraded their services, hoping they would start using Android. Even if they called me or I them, for whatever reason, I'd inquiry.

YOU are 'ON POINT'...and the man who I will always come to for these questions. Now that I've given you all of this praise, and patting you on the back, :0)I have another question. Joyfully, I see that ZTE's,HTC's,Lg's (my favorite, Samsung, and the other brand,I have been told not to purchase by a store clerk, Alcatel. I am excited to see the varitey.

My question, can any models of these phones work? Or do they have to be the exact models they are offering? You already know, I am looking for lower prices. I'm not cheap, but I'm using minutes due to limited income, so...I can't afford to pay much for a phone. I've been blessed and I've been saving small portions here and there. So I'm looking for the best deal.

I appreciate your time and talent. I TRULY thank you for what you do! GREAT GUY!!! ;)

Switching from SafeLink to TracPhone for an Android
by: Anonymous

First, allow me to thank you for already being of assistance by answering the question I had. I've been with SafeLink for years. I'd go to Family Dollar or Dollar General, wait for phones to go on sale to get better phones, while remaining a customer.

I am now in need of an Android phone and I see and have been told, SafeLink doesn't have, support, or use Androids. I really can't afford a phone bill, and I have a ton of minutes on my current SafeLink phone. I really don't want to leave SafeLink.

I've had very few problems with them. Can you tell me why SafeLink doesn't have Androids? I am referring to the ones with a 4.5 or 5.0 screen. Do you know why? Once again, I thank you for your help.

Old and New Phone
by: PrepaidWirelessGuy

When you bought your new phone, TracFone should have activated it on your existing TracFone account. Or is your old account a SafeLink account, and you're trying to transfer SafeLink minutes/dollars to your new TracFone account? In either case you'll need to call TracFone to resolve it.

Note that I removed your phone number as that is personal information you shouldn't post online. Regards.

Account vs. Phone
by: PrepaidWirelessGuy

The plan you're on is not tied to your phone. Your phone is activated on your account. So, if they allow you to activate your new phone on your existing account, nothing will change. You should, however, call them to make sure that they don't have any weird non-standard rules. Technically speaking, though, there's no reason why changing phones will affect your plan unless the new phone doesn't support the old features that you have, which doesn't appear to be the case.

Alcutel Pixi Phone
by: Anonymous

I was recently given a new phone, though I have an older Mobile Safelink phone with a lot of minutes on it. The new phone came with 450 airtime, 450 data, and 450 text, and I would continue to receive these kinds of times for a year. I want to transfer my airtime to my new phone because it would enable me to have more time to talk with. Do I have to leave Safelink alone, or can I combine both offers? I would really like to keep my minutes if possible.

Regarding Transferring
by: PrepaidWirelessGuy

I was a little confused by some of the experiences described below. If you have a SafeLink phone, and you're simply transferring to a new phone, it doesn't make sense that you would lose any minutes. The minutes are tied to your account; not to the phone itself.

If you're transferring from a TracFone to a SafeLink account, it makes sense that really nothing can be transferred if they need to create a new account. If they have a tool that they can use to transfer minutes, consider yourself lucky. It does, however, make sense that services not provided on the new plan cannot be transferred (ex. data).

Just be sure that you understand what the outcome will be BEFORE making a change. If it's really important to you that something get transferred, I recommend talking to at least two reps to see if you get a consistent response, and even escalating to a manager to confirm what they tell you.

No Data Can Be Transferred
by: Nel

I tried to use my Tracfone LG Ultimate 2 (LG L41C) smartphone with SafeLink. Tracfone said I could use the Ultimate 2 smartphone with SafeLink program--I could transfer my minutes, but not the DATA, only minutes and text. Even if you are already using DATA and want to enroll the phone you are currently using with data, the DATA disappears! So if you need DATA, be very careful with using a smartphone with any Lifeline program (like SafeLink), as the DATA feature is disabled! It seems that once SafeLink takes over the account, you can only use the features on the phone that they provide. I don't know how this affects apps like GPS, since I didn't transfer.

Safelink lied to me about transferring minutes
by: Lisette Perron

I had to get a new Safelink phone because I lost mine. When I called Safelink to order a replacement phone, I asked if my minutes (about 1500) would be transferred. I was told they wouldn't transfer my minutes to the new phone. I lost a lot of minutes THAT I HAD BEEN DILIGENTLY SAVING FOR AN EMERGENCY. It seems that I was lied to. If Safelink minutes can be transferred to an LG then, obviously my minutes should have been able to be transferred as well. What burns me up is that there is nothing I can do about getting those minutes back. I feel like calling Safelink about this but what would be the point.

I just did get a new tracfone smartphone . I called safelink customer service and had my minutes and same number transferred instantly. Literally only took 5 minutes. It was mandatory to get a new phone due to the 2g migration. A pleasant experience. All you need is the phone number you want to transfer, the new phone serial number and the new sim card number.

Finally, Smartphones with Safelink
by: Anonymous

From the comments it seems people spend a lot of time on the phone to get things transferred. If you use tracphone do it on their website in 1 - 2 minutes. As for smartphones, the TracFone website will show you the phones compatible with Safelink. When your phone arrives, do the transfer on their webpage and forget about calling those non-English speaking people. Also the live chat works great.

To Further Add To The TracFone Ripoff
by: Anonymous

The Safelink to TracFone upgrade also, while depriving me of unlimited texts and deducting for each one, does not display any contact name when you get a text, until after you open it, so they can charge for every spam BS that you get. This is a huge difference from the Safelink account I had for years. It worked flawlessly, but they had to mess it up. Not an upgrade! I had no choice in the matter. Like going from windows 10 to XP...

Mandatory Update
by: Anonymous

Safelink informed me that my Samsung phone previously provided by them had to be exchanged for a crappy TracFone, which they refer to as an upgrade. It is still a Safelink acct, and minutes are transferred. Now Web is enabled, which I will never use.

They said my old phone and service would stop working at the end of year, so I needed to upgrade. I wish I had waited. It is a Safelink acct with a TracFone instead of a Samsung. Their call, not mine.

They were not able to transfer free texts, but acknowledged I am supposed to have it. It now deducts 30 cents for each one. Not worth pursuing as they continue to try things that have previously not worked. This is a nationwide upgrade to a 3G service, not just for me. Common knowledge. I used the Safelink number they provided, so I am talking to the right people.

What's the mandatory upgrade from Safelink to TracFone that you're referring to? Please elaborate!

With respect to no longer being eligible for Safelink and wanting to transfer to TracFone, you should just call TracFone. They should be able to activate your old phone on a TracFone account.

Safelink Mandatory Upgrade Nightmare
by: Anonymous

Upgraded Safelink account to Tracphone, because it was required. The unlimited text I have had 4 yrs disappeared. Deduction for each text. Their solution was to send another phone. I explained I would be out of town for the next 10 days. They sent the phone and deactivated mine while I was out of town. They sent a SIM card to where I was.

Same exact problem Tuesday as Thursday when I upgraded. Deducted for text. Their solution? To send another phone, which would again deactivate me while away...slow learners. 3 hours on the phone and nothing accomplished

Each call you have to start at the beginning, same as if you're transferred. They work from a script, are hard to understand, cannot problem solve, and do not care.

Keeping Your TracFone Phone
by: PrepaidWirelessGuy

I definitely understand your frustration. At some level it makes sense that operationally they need to setup a new account with their standard Safelink phone. However, I believe that once you get your new phone and service activated, you can then activate your old TracFone phone on your Safelink account. Have you asked customer service about doing that?

Tracphone-->Safelink
by: Stephen G.

I had been a long-term Tracphone customer (2000 to Present), and finally have no other option than to go to Safelink. I would've hoped, since they are essentially the same service, that I could keep the LG440g I had with Tracphone, and change it to the Safelink service, but, apparently this is not possible. I CAN keep the same number, but they will need to send a new phone. I had at least hoped they had finally gotten to the point of how everyone else is enrolled, and simply change the SIM card, but it doesn't seem to be able to yet.

Clarification Needed
by: PrepaidWirelessGuy

Can you clarify what you're trying to accomplish? You have Safelink and Straight Talk phones/accounts, and you want to combine accounts? A Safelink account has to remain a Safelink account. The whole point of the program is that you can't afford a cell phone or service, so you qualify for this government sponsored free phone service.

There's a possibility that you could cancel your Straight Talk service, and use that phone on your Safelink account, or vice versa.

Transferring Safelink to Straight Talk Phone
by: Tina

I wanted to know if I can transfer my Safelink phone to my Tracfone that has Straight Talk service? Would I be able to keep my Safelink number to the Straight Talk phone? Also, I have minutes on each of them. Will all my minutes be combined on the one phone?

by: Anonymous

Is it any body on here from safelink. That can tell me how I can activate my phone online. Every time I call safelink they tell me something different every time. Last one said I had to call from another phone. I couldn't get minutes transfered when I was talking on it. It says I can just activate my phone call or I can Activate and change my minutes to the new phone online. I would call from other phone ,but j don't have another phone to call from.I have wifi at home that's where I at now. And I have to return the phone that activated now to safelink. But before I do that got to get minutes from other phone. Please, if any body knows where I can go online ,and activate my new phone. Please answer if you know or if your a safelink person where in can get it transfered and send there phone back to safelink. I would really appreciate it of somebody would let me know. There is no cash balance. My minutes are being used if I text. As for the title, my transfers to different phones was successful twice. I'm not happy about the other. I do thank you for your info; very helpful.

Sounds Like You Changed Programs
by: PrepaidWirelessGuy

That's interesting. To me it sounds as though transferred your account to a TracFone account, as opposed to changing your phone on your existing SafeLink account.

Or maybe there's confusion around what you're being charged for. You get free texts up to your allocation. So each text is decremented from your available bucket. Do you have a cash balance that they're withdrawing from?

Also, I'm confused by the title you used. How have you been successful if it didn't give you the expected free services once you transferred?

Success For Me...Twice
by: Anonymous

My original Safelink phone was defective, so I bought an LG TRACFONE(flip phone), and transferred my minutes (350 minutes unlimited texts) with no problems in about an hour or less. Now I have transferred to a LG smartphone, and now I am being charged for text messages incoming and outgoing with my minutes. I'm switching back to my flip phone.

LG 306 Success
by: Anonymous

I was able to transfer my Safelink minutes from the standard Safelink phone. It too awhile, but it was successful. First I called the direct line, and someone who couldn't speak English properly couldn't understand the numbers. So since we were on the phone for more than 25 minutes, he said it was protocol to hand customers over to a supervisor.

The supervisor then set me up correctly. It was around 8pm by the time I was done, but the phone didn't completely activate until 12 noon the next day.

I was a little afraid that it wouldn't activate, because it wasn't the Safelink small standard phones, but it did work. I now have a smart phone with Safelink, and I am loving this free government phone, I love America!!

To Clarify...
by: PrepaidWirelessGuy

You can convert your Safelink account to a TracFone account, and effectively keep whatever balances (cash, minutes) on the new account. However, you can't simply transfer your balances to a NEW TracFone account, and keep your SafeLink account. Please let me know if the difference between these two scenarios isn't clear.

Unfortunately, your best bet is to keep calling. When you say you can't get through to them, what do you mean? You're on hold and don't wait, or there's no option to talk to a person?

Safelink is Garbage
by: Anonymous

TracFone would not let me transfer the minutes to the phone I already have, I had to transfer my number to the phone they sent me, and it is next to useless. It drops calls almost every time I use it and the free minutes gets eaten up by calling back trying to finish calls. The operators contradict one another and I can not get accurate information. I HATE them. Spam texts get through with no problem and use up the minutes. Call quality is DREADFUL.

SafeLink Nightmare
by: Anonymous

I was told I had to upgrade my phone since they're upgrading their system. Run like hell till you don't have to at their task.

I have spent numerous hours trying to change online and on their support number. They say you can't use either the new or old phone; that's all I have! I'm seriously having panic attacks, and they've made my life hell by their constant calls and emails!!!

There is one thing they want, to protect their name. I took their survey and kept telling it I will not ever tell anyone to use their company. There are numerous other government paid phones; find out ahead of time which will support your account.

I have dealt with many companies in the last 40 plus years, and have never ever had the horrible experience SafeLink has put me through.

By the way, all the upgrade does is eat your minutes by turning texts into emails charging you each time. Please look a lot before putting your life in their hands!
Barry
p.s. This gives me a little peace, knowing my hell can help someone from repeating it!

Minutes transferred...but next day no!
by: Anonymous

Lost my Safelink phone, tried a TracFone that was given to me. I called customer service, and the lady said she would transfer my remaining minutes to the new phone (200). We got disconnected twice after trying to get the phone to recognize the SIM card that was in it when it was given to me.

I got tired of messing with it and bought a new TracFone the next day. When I called to activate it the guy said sorry since your phone was lost or stolen you can only have 10 minutes transferred to the new phone and you'll have to wait til next month to get your minutes!! WTF!!! What does me losing my phone have to do with transferring minutes? Plus the lady just the day before said it was fine to transfer the minutes!

I'm still waiting, turning the new phone off and back on every couple of hours in order for the activation to take place and for me to enjoy my ten whole miutes of airtime until next month! BS!

Any single bucket Tracfone will do!
by: Anonymous

Safelink service is basically just a special Monthly Value Plan that the phone is enrolled in and which is paid for out of the USF.

You can freely change your phone at any time to any other basic Tracfone. However, you can't use a BYOD or Android Tracfone because the Safelink plan does not support the three bucket (voice, text, data) airtank that those phones use. On the Tracfone website, the prohibited phones have a message that indicate they can't be used on Safelink.

When ready to activate the new phone, simply use the Tracfone website support section to transfer your service and minutes to a new Tracfone. If the new phone runs under a different cellular network (Tracfones may use Verizon, T-Mobile, or AT&T), you will have to wait for the number port to be completed. But otherwise, it is a very straightforward process!

Wanting to transfer to an upgrade, but which one works?
by: Anonymous

I'm experiencing trouble with my tracfone that I got from Safelink. I don't know which tracfones work with Safelink. Can I get help with learning which tracfones I can purchace and get my minutes transferred?
I have called Safelink, but unable to understand the person. I would tell him what my cell phone wouldn't do. He would have me punch in some numbers, then he asked me if it was working. I told him "No"...but he said "Yes, its working. I can't replace your phone, because it works". I tried to ask him what tracfones would work with Safelink, but he wouldn't tell me.
I don't want to buy any tracfone, not knowing if it would work or not.
I am frustrated!!!

On Third New SIM Card With Safelink
by: The Capn'

Acquired my own phone recently after Safelink gave me the go ahead that the new one would work with their service; all that was needed was to change the SIM card out. The new SIM arrives, called SF, and they end up burning the wrong info to the new card.

This all took place during three one-hour long calls over a 36 hour period. Safelink did offer two-day shipping on the new one. Moral of this story - when switching from a SL-provided phone to one of your own -- double and triple check with the rep that they have the correct serial numbers etc. from the all phones and cards.

I just spent about 15 minutes with Safelink customer service. My old phone will not turn on for periods of time, or shut off. Power button is broke. I requested a phone replacement. It's really frustrating talking to those electronic people. They don't hear you correctly, then you have to keep repeating yourself. If you try to ask for a real person it either shuts you down or starts the stupid menu all over again. What's the number to talk to a person, instead of a fake one?

by: PrepaidWirelessGuy

If they transferred your service, but not your minutes, you may be out of luck. Did you ask them to transfer your dollars/minutes and they refused, or you forgot to ask? Either way, if they have a history of your previous balance, you might be able to recover them, though at this point I'm not optimistic. Please let us know what they say when you call back to ask!

Safelink Transfer
by: Anonymous

I successfully switched my safelink lg 320g to an lg 800g touchscreen phone.

1. I first went online to tracfone.com and requested to change my service to a new phone. I had to enter quite a few long codes but it was fairly easy. This programmed my new phone but did not activate it.

2. The next day I called tracfone and informed them my new phone was still not activated. I talked to Ms. India for about 30 minutes, during that time I had to restart my phone several times and enter a few short codes until finally Ms. India put in a service request to port my number and activate my new phone. Within 30 minutes my phone was activated and ready to use.

Ms. India also told me that I would need a new SIM card for the safelink service but I never received it in the mail and it was not needed.

Overall an ok experience. I'm glad that I completed the programming online - it was very difficult understanding Ms. India. I would definitely recommend the lg 800 touchscreen phone; works great and it also has mobile web browsing using your Safelink minutes.

Successfully Transferred Safelink service to NEW Tracfone
by: Anonymous

I just wanted to say that I JUST transferred my Safelink service from the phone they gave me to another Tracfone I purchased myself. The process was relatively easy. Just call Safelink customer service and explain that you have purchased a new phone and want to transfer your service to the new phone. They are more than happy to help. The process takes about 20 min over the phone. They will have you enter some codes, provide the serial number from the new phone, etc. DO NOT ACTIVATE THE NEW PHONE BEFORE CALLING SAFELINK. The process is MUCH easier if you have not yet activated the phone. After you hang up it will take 1-48 hours for your new phone to activate and be available for use. ALL of my minutes were successfully transferred over as well.

I just wanted to share positive results.

Changing To A New TracFone For Safelink Account
by: Nancy Stoll

If you have a tracfone for your safelink account and want or need to replace the phone all you have to do is call safelink and give them all the info on both phones. You will get all your saved minutes with the same phone number and can also get the next month's minutes added on to your account if the end of the month is near. It can take a couple of hours to a couple of days for the new phone to register the new activation. Don't waste your time by calling tracfone because that will result in a new phone number and lost minutes.

by: PrepaidWirelessGuy

I think your best bet is to call TracFone. They should have a method to convert your SafeLink account to TracFone, or create a new TracFone account and transfer any funds you have on your Safelink account over. Hopefully you won't have to lose any money you have on your existing account.

I switched my safelink to a new tracfone
by: Mocknbird2

It was a real pain to get it done. Had some bad experiences similar to other commenters here, ie, customer service person that I couldn't even communicate with due to their poor english (and I am NOT that person, that really was the case).
But, finally they did switch it over. I had to file a better business bureau complaint before I got anyone to help me though. Which is pitiful in and of itself. I did get my minutes transferred (over 500) and all was well in the end. Now I'm about to try it again, because even though the phone I bought online was better than the free one, it was still a pretty crummy phone. So, now I got an OK one for cheap on Ebay. We'll see what happens.

Lost Minutes
by: PrepaidWirelessGuy

That's so odd. Typically when you lose a phone and the carrier agrees to replace it, there isn't a new account created. Rather, the account is put on hold until you get the new phone (so no one else can use the old lost phone). Once you receive the new phone, it's activated on the existing account, so your minutes are not lost.

If they do need to activate a new account for some reason, they should be able to transfer (or at least credit the balance) to the new account. Some carriers don't do this by policy, however, there's usually some level of customer service that can accomplish this.

I can only recommend that you try to escalate it. There are some fraud scenarios that carriers try to stop by disallowing transfers, however, there's usually a way to accomplish it if the situation warrants.

No minutes transferred
by: Pat Hyatt

I lost ( or so I thought) my tracfone, so I called and ordered a new one....a couple days later I found the old phone, then I got the new LG phone. So I proceeded to connect the new phone, well I had 1553.50 minutes on my old phone. Comes to when they want to give me 10 minutes...whoa---thats not at all fair. I saved those minutes for over a year. Just for an emergency this coming winter. So I get penalized for losing my phone, I ended up with a total of 78 minutes...This sucks. I offered to send the new phone back, oh no, you can't do that because it has already been activated???BS So in order to have a phone I had to eat the minutes I lost. Is that what this world's coming to, you can't even keep minutes you saved..just because you lost your old phone. THIS REALLY SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TracFone User Accidentally Put on SafeLink
by: PrepaidWirelessGuy

Wow...that's truly unbelievable! How frustrating must that be. I expect that it's not impossible to happen as they probably reside on the same prepaid wireless platform, however, it's probably an extremely rare edge case. Maybe they had a system issue?

The only thing that I can recommend is that you continue to call both SafeLink and TracFone to resolve the issue. I suppose if nothing was getting resolved, you could ask TracFone to activate a new account for you, and then transfer/port in your number to the new account. Your minutes should be transferred over as well, and if that's not a guarantee, then TracFone should be able to provide you a manual credit for the balance on your account.

Ultimately, though, they'll need to release the MEID of your phone before they can do anything, which sounds like part of the problem you're having. Their advanced tech support should be able to figure that out though. I've seen carriers have difficulty releasing an MEID, however, there's always a workaround for those with sufficient knowledge. If they can't resolve that particularly problem, they should send you a replacement phone to get on the proper account with your existing number.

Note that they need to do the steps to get you on the proper TracFone account in the right order or you could risk losing your number.

Safelink unable to help
by: Karl Waechtler

I originally bought my cell phone from Tracfone, it was updated and then for no reason at all I ended up with Safekink, never ever applied for it and didn't even know who Safelink was. I never had an ID # . I do not want Safelink, but they can't although they promised to transfer me back to Tracfone. I bought another phone from Tracfone, but my Ser. is asssociated with Safelink and I can't register my Ser. # with tracfone. I am utterly and totally frustrated. All phones I bought from Trafone, Safelink never provided me with a free phone. I am totally at my wits end.
Who can help, before I get a heart attack, I spend countless hours without any help.

SafeLink and TracFone Prepaid Wireless Minutes
by: PrepaidWirelessGuy

My understanding is that you can actually use TracFone wireless refill cards on a SafeLink phone/account. For example, if you run out of your free minutes, or want to use other services that aren't included in the SafeLink program, you can load TracFone dollars onto your account for such extra usage.

Also, if at some point you no longer qualify for the SafeLink free prepaid cell phone service, you're allowed to continue using your phone with TracFone topup cards.

I expect that if you no longer qualify for the program, you shouldn't have a problem transferring whatever balance you have on your SafeLink account to a TracFone account. You can then do an equipment swap on your account to the TracFone LG handset.

If you already have the LG TracFone handset, you can try just swapping the phone and account. I assume this is your situation. However, if that's not the case, before you buy a new phone, your best bet is to give TracFone a call to make sure.

I've found that they're pretty flexible in terms of switching from their free cell phone service to their regular service. That said, in general, many prepaid wireless providers don't allow customers to transfer balances between accounts as a way to avoid fraud.

Lastly, your question is actually related to keeping your SafeLink service, but simply using another TracFone phone, I think that should also be possible, though calling them to verify would be best. I do know from talking directly to the folks over at Assurance wireless, that they allow their customers to use ANY Virgin Mobile phone.

I hope this helps. If you post some more clarifying information about your question, I can help by following up directly with the SafeLink team to get specific answers.
