Prepaid Wireless Savings $ Savings $ Savings

by Matt
(Gilbert, AZ)

On the Straight Talk $45.00 per month unlimited talk/text/web and free 411 calls, I save $900.00 per year. That is almost half of one full pay check. My post-paid equivalent was $120.00 per month because I did use 411 on occasion. At $1.50 per 411 call, the charges really rack up. Anyone not needing a smart phone (which is most of us) would be wise to investigate the prepaid option. For too long, we have been paying more for our mobile service than our European counterparts. Now, instead of contracts, the telecommunication companies will be competing based on quality of telephone service and customer service. We really have Boost Mobile to thank for shattering the pricing collusion in the market.

No Contract Cell Phone Savings

Great points! This might sound strange, but I really do believe that we're in the midst of a prepaid wireless revolution in North America. There are even smartphone-like handsets starting to come to the prepaid wireless world, including prepaid BlackBerries. As you noted, most people don't want or need smartphones anyway, which gives them even more reasons (or less excuses!) to go prepaid wireless.

Looking at the data from analyst reports, we're seeing that postpaid is declining, while prepaid is the real growth engine. Sprint, for example, is doubling down on prepaid with its purchase of Virgin Mobile. The next couple of years should be really interesting!
