Free Cell Phone Service Should Be A Right

by Roy
(Gladstone)

Yes, cell phones should be a right. People would be informed of emergencies, weather, news, political, family and friends requests. Or job opportunities (how to get a hold of you). Phones should be smartphones with Internet options. For job search, local news, and local laws and rules (to know if something is illegal such as parking on street in winter). To be notified if your vehicle is in way of snow removal.

The government can use it for elections, voting referendums, or to actually vote. People need to be informed.

The phones can also act as debit cards. Or as passports or ticket passes.

There are many uses that can not be covered at this time. But would benefit all.

Some Food For Thought About Free Cellphone Service
by: PrepaidWirelessGuy

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. When I was reading you submission, I couldn't help but think that all of the suggestions you made were really good ideas, and would make life quite convenient. There would also be some real tangible benefits for the government in terms of certain administration like you mentioned.

However, although these conveniences would be nice, I can't help but feel that they don't warrant the classification of a basic human need or right. There are plenty of people out there who make enough money to live, but don't have enough to buy a cell phone, Internet at home, cable television, etc. Each household has to prioritize its spending, and I think that having shelter, food, and basic education are much easier to see as things that are human rights.

When I think about the government constantly cutting education programs, and the number of homeless and hungry people out there, I can't believe that the general population would want to vote for the government spending money on free cell phone service for low income households instead of these other things.

Anyway, I know many people would disagree with me, and there's a lot of people who feel the same way you do, but I'm just throwing this out there as some food for thought ;-). I know it's a good topic for discussion, which is why I included this question for people to share their thoughts. I'm definitely an advocate of people taking advantage of this opportunity if they qualify, which is why I have it on the site!
