DA Civilian Frustrated With U.S. Prepaid Internet Options

by David Clark
(Lauf, Germany)

Living and working in Germany spoils us concerning all things with the internet. Pre-paid wireless internet access can be purchased for good prices just about everywhere including supermarkets.

Trying to find pre-paid wireless internet access in the US is a huge step backwards and has left me exhausted. At this point I am not even sure whether pre-paid wireless internet in America is even possible.

This page has been a big help but I still haven't found anything near what I need.

Prepaid Broadband Options Galore!
by: PrepaidWirelessGuy

Well it has been well over a year now since we both expressed that the prepaid mobile broadband options in the US were pretty sad to say the least. And what a difference a year makes! It's as though it's a completely different market altogether.

Can you believe that there are now 14 prepaid broadband providers?! In addition, the breadth of options for plans is so much greater now. Needless to say (but I'll say it anyway!), competition in the prepaid broadband space has been fierce.

One thing that we did see come and go in the last year and a half are prepaid unlimited data plans. Some companies still advertise unlimited broadband plans, however, they all cap them or severely throttle speeds to the point where it's essentially useless. This was seen as necessary as the price pressure became so fierce.

Anyway, hopefully people are now finding that the US has much more to offer, and I expect it will only continue to improve over time.

American Prepaid Wireless Internet is Behind
by: PrepaidWirelessGuy

I couldn't agree with you more! There are certainly other parts of the world, Europe in particular, that are much more advanced as it relates to prepaid Internet in particular.

Similar to how much far ahead of North America Europe was with text messaging, but have now caught up (and even surpassed Europe!), I expect that the same will happen with prepaid wireless Internet. That said, I do expect it will be a good two or three years before someone with your experience would start to see what's available in the U.S. and coming close to what you have available to you now.

So you reviewed the Prepaid Wireless Broadband Plans page, and didn't find anything that meets your needs? Are you looking for a classic PAYG Broadband option? If so, as you'll read at the link, that option is not yet available in North America.

Please let me know if there is another type of offer you were looking for? But chances are that you're right, because North America definitely is currently behind...sorry!
