Construction/Property Mgr & Restaurant Owner Apple Ipad Review

by Paul
(Los Angeles)

Got the Ipad a week ago. Quick comments:

1) Great for the kids in the back of the car.

2) Everything you did or had with the Ipod but bigger.

3) Cumbersome to hold while using. Someone is going to make a fortune inventing a wire or velcro device for the Ipad.

4) Cannot compete with laptop (yet) with regards to general work-related programs.

5) Great for pics & music.

6) Cannot download Adobe Flash. Many sites use this like Yahoo movies and porn sites, etc.

7) Major advantage for me is being able to read magazines and newspapers. Wife said either the newspapers and magazines go or I do. I got an Ipad instead.

8) Cannot watch Slingbox without wifi.

9) Cannot listen to Sirius/XM by going on the net. Need the APP and then you can not listen to premium channels like Howard Stern.

10) Can only do one task at a time. If you are listening to music, that is all you can do. No windows. Any task or program you are on has to be terminated when you go to another.

11) Typing is not as hard or difficult as rumored. Not as good as keyboard, but for most leisure tasks it's fine.

12) No USB connection. Big negative.

Adobe Flash for Mobile Killed in Favor of HTML5
by: PrepaidWirelessGuy

Thank you for your post. Ironically, today, the day after your post, Adobe announced that it is discontinuing development of Flash for mobile in favor of HTML5. Wow, if only Steve Jobs were around to hear this announcement of defeat!

There's still a lot of debate as to whether Flash will ultimately also be killed for the desktop, though I expect that even if it is, that will be years down the road. Given that Flash for mobile devices is still not mature, moving quickly to HTML5 will be a smooth and quick transition.

It really doesn't make sense to have different media platforms for desktop and mobile, particularly given that they are quickly converging. i.e. Supporting both with the same platforms will be far more efficient.

Interesting iPad Observations
by: James

My kids definitely love the iPad. In fact, they love ANY tablet, especially once they figured out that movies can be loaded/accessed on it. I'm kind of regretting ever introducing that to them. I'd much rather they use it for learning games, reading, etc. It can't be good for their development to play lame, non-educational games like angry birds.

It's interesting because it really does seem like a massive iPod, but in reality there's something so different and special about it that make me not want to draw that comparison at all, not sure why.

The whole debate over Adobe Flash support vs. HTML5 is so silly. Maybe now that Steve Jobs has passed away (rest his soul), that personal vendetta will be laid to rest, and Apple will just decide to support both (probably not!). It really is ridiculous. Yes, the Web has been changing to adopt HTML5, however, there are still so many major sites that don't. I really don't like having to think about not traveling with my laptop and wondering if I'm going to encounter a site that won't work on my iPad. It really is lame!

The lack of ability to multitask on the iPad is really lame. Even Android doesn't do this well. The only mobile operating system that really feels like multi-tasking on a PC is webOS. Unfortunately that's basically dead. Maybe Apple will buy it?!

With the iPad 2, holding it is much easier because it's so light, and you definitely need a case that will allow you to prop it up. Unfortunately, using a case like that ruins the sleekness of the design, which is really a shame.

Not sure what you mean by a wire or velcro device to help hold it? What about just using one of the thousands of cases that lets you use it as a stand?

Being required to tether it to iTunes is super lame. I'm not sure yet if iCloud helps to solve this, but at the end of the day, I still can't insert the memory card from my camera or computer, which I absolutely hate about the iPad. My next tablet may be a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, though I'm not crazy about Android either.
