Can You Justify Buying an Apple iPad?

by Jason
(CA)

I have to say that I think the Apple iPad is super cool! It just looks so darn sleek with a brilliant display. And those commercials make it look like so much fun to browse around on it. It really makes me want one!

The problem for me is that I just can't think of a practical reason to have one. It's way to big to replace an iPod for music (which I know it's not intended to do anyway). It's not powerful/functional enough to replace a laptop. Although it could be compared to a netbook in terms of portability, I think typing on a virtual keyboard would drive me nuts. Not to mention that in the commercials you never actually see anyone touch typing. I mean if you want to actually use two hands, you'd need to either place it on your lap or on a table, which I expect would make it amazingly awkward to see the screen because it can't be tilted like a laptop/netbook screen.

If I were a big book reader, I could see how the iPad would be a great device. And if I just wanted to surf the Web, it would be pretty cool to have on hand, however, I'm almost always entering data, so that's where it falls down for me. I could see it replacing an iPod touch, where people use it a lot for surfing the Web and for apps and games.

Even if I could convince myself that it's a cool gadget that I really need to get, at that price, it's really a non-starter. Maybe $200 or $300 for a basic version would be something I could rationalize, but otherwise, it's an expensive gadget that's just another device for me to keep charged up. Hmm...super cool, but what can I really do with it that I can't easily do with a laptop? Hopefully I'll get a chance to try it out at some point!

Apple iPad is Pricey!
by: PrepaidWirelessGuy

I definitely agree with you that Apple's iPad is certainly pricy. Don't get me wrong, there's an amazing amount of technology in there, and I don't take that for granted. However, as you said, for a device that really doesn't replace an existing category, but actually creates a new one, it will take people some time to wrap their heads around why they need one, and how much they're willing to pay/invest.

As the price comes down, and don't worry, it will(!), the decision to get one will become easier. Those buying the 3G iPad may have an opportunity to have the device subsidized by the carrier (ex. AT&T) for signing up for a data contract. This is the same way it works for handsets, and what we've already seen with netbooks as well.

This might sound crazy, but I'm actually thinking of getting one for my son in a few months when he turns two. He won't be ready to type yet, so data entry won't be an issue. But I think playing around on the touch screen, and learning to navigate Web pages, start learning email, and hopefully download educational games would make this a great device for him to start learning about computers. No keys to rip off (which he's already done on my laptop!), and no hinges to break. My only concern, obviously, would be whether or not it's durable. I wouldn't let him run around with it on his own, but even supervised, it's gonna take some beating. Perhaps a decent case and a screen protector should suffice. How drool resistant is it?! Though, I'm thinking that I'll need to wait for the price to drop. I think a basic WiFi version would be fine, and I think my max price at this point would be roughly $300 if I believe it's durable enough to last.

Anyway, we'll have to wait and see how things go. And within a year, we could see more competitiors like Dell and flurry of others come out with similar devices that are more flexible (ex. memory card reader, removable battery, etc.). Maybe an Android version of a Tablet like this would be a good alternative for people who want apps, but not necessarily an Apple lover (but that's another conversation!). I guess time will tell!
