Boost Chat Plan is Causing Me Some Pain!

by Mark
(New York)

First, I have to say that I really like the idea of these daily type plans. I feel ripped off and stressed out when I have to pay per minute, but can't yet quite afford a monthly plan.

I signed up for the Boost chat plan because I like walkie-talkie, and my friend gave me an old phone he had lying around. What I don't like is the fact that I have to pay the daily fee everyday even if I don't use the phone. It's not a major problem because I do tend to use my phones most days, but the thought of paying for something I'm not using does give me a bit of a headache.

Not sure if others have discovered this, but let's say I have $1 on my account, and the next day they take $1 for the daily fee, well, what happens is that although I've paid for that day, my phone is shut off because my balance is at zero! I've heard this is a known issue, but come on, really...wow!

It's easy enough to avoid this problem by just keeping a couple of extra dollars on the account, but again, another thing that causes me to have headaches when I think about it.

Lastly, I really can't stand the problem with text messaging taking so long to go through. My friends on other networks don't have this problem. For me texting needs to be pretty much real time, otherwise it's useless. Hopefully this issue will be fixed. At least it's prepaid and I didn't pay for the phone, so I can leave anytime I want if I find something better. I love the freedom of no contract prepaid!

Thanks for the comments Mark! I definitely understand what you're saying. In the daily plan comparison chart I include a line that indicates whether it's pay per day of use or everyday. I agree that this could be a deciding factor for many people.

I expect that those that charge everyday can usually provide more value to customers because there's a greater probability of recurring revenue for the carrier. However, that is not always the case, so careful examination of the plan details/features is always worthwhile.

With respect to your experience with getting barred when your balance goes to zero even though you've already paid for the day...I've heard of that problem. It would be interesting to know if this has been fixed. One would think that they could simply keep $0.01 on these accounts at all times to avoid the account from ever getting to zero. And I don't believe there's anything you could ever buy thru your phone that would ever deplete that penny...hmmm...It's hard to say what system limitations or other issues they have...

I've also heard the issue with text messaging, and have experienced it myself on postpaid Nextel years ago. While I don't know the details of why this is the case, my understanding is that it has something to do with the iDEN architecture. Boost REALLY needs to fix this or risk either losing existing customers, or turning off potential customers. In my opinion, this is a big deal.
